This dreamy photogram is about to get a new home. I’m a little sad to part with it but I’m donating the original to the JSU Red Tie Dinner & Auction event to help raise scholarship funds for the JSU Art Alumni Chapter. I created this photogram in 2017. I believe it was my second time working with photograms and I immediately fell in love with the process. Photograms are a cameraless photographic process. They’re made by placing objects directly on the surface of light-sensitive material, such as photographic paper, and exposing it to light. The images are then developed and fixed the same way as a traditional silver gelatin image.

This image was created by placing fabric masks, ribbon, plastic wrap, and other materials, including a crystal vase (top right). I love the dream-like aesthetic which makes me think of dreamy parties and dancing while also alluding to the anonymous and mysterious nature often associated with masquerades. One of my all-time favorite movie scenes is the masquerade scene in Labyrinth so it’s not wonder this is one of my favorite images.
