Photography as a Spiritual Practice: Seeing Beyond the Visible

Some artists begin with a concept and then create work to express it. Others, like myself, create intuitively and later uncover the meaning behind what we’ve made. I have always walked a fine line between these two approaches—between instinct and intention, surrender and control. As a young BFA student studying art, graphic design, and photography, it took me years to understand the difference between art and design. And even longer to give myself permission to be an artist again after immersing myself in the structured, goal-oriented world of design. But even before I knew how to put it into words, [...]

Beyond Form: Exploring Presence

Energy in Motion Beyond Form: Exploring Presence Energy in Motion Beyond Form: Exploring Presence (series) Left: Presence: Within the Frame Takayama, Japan | 2024 Right: Absence: Elsewhere Takayama, Japan | 2024 Photography has always been more than just capturing moments—it’s a way to explore movement, energy, and presence in ways that push past the obvious. I’ve been playing with these ideas, experimenting with how distortion, negative space, light, and texture can reveal something deeper. These latest portraits of Karl and me, taken in Japan, are part of that journey. I wanted to see what happens when form dissolves, [...]

Photography as a Spiritual Practice: Capturing Energy in Motion

Everything is energy—light, movement, even the essence of a place. Photography, at its core, is about harnessing light, freezing fleeting moments into something we can hold onto. But what if it could go deeper? What if, instead of just documenting, we could capture the energy itself—the pulse of a space, the feeling of a moment, the unseen forces at play? Lately, I’ve been experimenting with motion and light painting, not just as a technique but as a way to tune into the spirit of a place. By letting the camera move with me, I’m starting to capture something I’ve always [...]

Fluttering Chrysalis Consumed

There is a creek called Five Mile Creek located near my childhood home in Birmingham, AL that's always been a place of magic in my imagination. These images are part of an experimental series I made that consisted of exposing plant life from around the creek during the middle of the day and then immediately processing the paper to stop exposure in the creek itself. For me, these prints are a combination of science and magic that commemorate this special place and the nostalgia of my childhood. Making these images was simply an experiment to see how pre-coated cyanotype paper [...]

Chemigrams: Beautiful Little Mysteries

Chemigrams are an experimental art form made by chemically manipulating light-sensitive paper. These were made using a variety of resists that include common kitchen and household items such as eggs, butter, jelly, cooking spray, sunscreen, dish soap, and tape. The resists are applied to the paper while the paper is being exposed to light and then moved back and forth between developer and fix until the desired result is achieved.
