Grad Journal: Fall 2017, Week 5

I feel like I barely held onto my sanity most of this week. There were at least three days I was so tired I wanted to lie down on the floor and cry. I want to be proud of myself for pushing through the week but I'm too concerned about the stress my mind and body are under to pat myself on the back. I've been working hard to feel caught up in my classes, but I've been feeling particularly bad for the past two weeks. Last week I noticed I was feeling unusually light-headed, dizzy, short of breath, and [...]

MFA Orientation 2017

We got some new blood in the house, five new students to be exact. Three grads are graduating this semester so it was about to get a little lonely. I'm super excited about our new people. Everyone is cool and has a different background so it's a nice mix. Plus everyone revealed Introductions: Jamie, Me, James, Charissa, Megan, Stefanie, Laura, Bethany, Annabelle, Patrice, Brandon Goodies! Talked about our role in the art department, being professional, and mentoring the undergrads. Added newbies to FB and Slack MFA groups Discussed new equipment, FERPA, Title IX, MFA Handbook, Visiting Artists, and upcoming events [...]

ART 690: Darkroom Photography

Graduate Darkroom Photography with Sarah Miles I've always considered Sarah Miles one of my professors because of how much I interacted with her and because of how much she inspired me during my time as an undergrad student but I never had the honor of having an actual class with her. Finally, six years later, I can officially refer to her as one of my professors. Hooray for returning to school! My photographic education had essentially been entirely digital up till now and I have been itching to learn about film and work in a darkroom for several years now. Needless [...]

SPE 2017, Orlando

Society for Photographic Education Annual Conference Family Values Orlando, FL | March 9-12, 2017 This year I was the only person from JSU to attend the national conference. I was able to attend thanks to a $500 Travel Award from SPESC that helped cover my expenses. I drove down on Wednesday and stayed offsite at The Fountains. I attended some really excellent panels and met up with some friends, but this SPE conference felt off. I think the hotel location was bad -- there was nothing within walking distance, and attendance was definitely below average. Highlights Awarded a SPESC Travel [...]

Semester Review, Fall 2016

At the end of each semester MFA students are required to present a formal summary of research and creative work to all members of the MFA Committee. I had my review today and it went really well. I enjoy having opportunities to present but can't help but feel nervous. I talked too fast and ended up with dry mouth constantly causing me to have to pause for a sip of water. It's so weird because that never happens to me. I need more presentation opportunities so I can work through it. I created a keynote presentation of my work from [...]
