The Pendulum of Art: What Society’s Shift Means for Artists Today

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years as an artist, student, and educator, it’s that art is a reflection of the world around us. It’s not just about what we see—it’s about what we feel, what we long for, and how we process the times we’re living in. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how art follows the emotional and philosophical state of society—and how we’re in the middle of a major shift right now. But this isn’t new. It’s happened before. Art as a Mirror of Society’s Shifts History shows us that art swings like a [...]

My Dirty Little Addiction: Buying Domains & Making Art

Trying so hard to resist the urge to buy three more domain names… but I will be a good Carol and limit myself to just one tonight. One day, when my army of AI assistants is fully operational, my digital empire will ascend. Many years ago, I had a website called Totally Carol. It was a fan site… for myself. Maybe I should bring it back. goes off to buy the domain "totallycarol.com" A few minutes later…

A Pandemic Time Capsule: Day 5 in the COVID Ward

I logged into Twitch today and saw one of my old livestreams was still there—a raw, unfiltered glimpse into my time in the hospital during the early days of the pandemic. It was labeled Day 3 of my COVID hospitalization, but it was actually Day 5 which I know because of the date (9/27/2020) and my extensive documentation. Watching it now feels like stepping into a time capsule. Life has changed so much since then. I'll always love fat me. She was fun. She was awesome. And yet, looking back, my heart aches for how I was treated by family—their misplaced priorities, their inability to see me beyond their own discomfort.

Reading Out of Order: Trusting the Journey, Not the Path

Recently, I listened to someone call out those of us who read the ending of a book first, preaching that we’re ruining the story, robbing ourselves of the experience. I 100% disagree. Reading the ending first makes me more excited, more invested. If I know I like where the story is going, I want to see how it gets there. It reassures me that my time won’t be wasted. Karl, my husband, is laughing at me right now because I was just reading Chapter 5 of The Healing Energy of Your Hands when I realized, out loud, that the chapter [...]

This portfolio site is in major need of an update but life has kept me too busy to tackle it just yet so I wanted to quickly mention a few projects I've been working on when not teaching and working on non-art/design projects. Blackwater Buccaneers & Lumen PhotoVocab Game I finally self-published Lumen PhotoVocab Game. Lumen began as my 2021 MFA thesis project on game-based learning and it and my game publishing company Blackwater Buccaneers have been a major focus for me since graduating. You can learn more about Lumen at BlackwaterBucs.com . So much work goes into Blackwater. I [...]

Life Here Lately: Career Goals & Big Dreams

Hi friends! This year is flying by so I wanted to go ahead and post a little status update for any of you that might be curious about what I've been up to. I graduated with my MFA in December and life has been pretty nonstop ever since. If you're curious to know what I've been up to and would like to know more about what I have in the works this is the post for you. 🙃

SPE Houston 20/20 Vision

Society for Photographic Education National Conference Houston, TX; March 4th-8th @ The Westin Galleria Another wonderful SPE conference surrounded by amazing people! It's been 10 years since I joined SPE and it remains one of my absolute favorite communities. This year I had the pleasure of sharing the experience with undergrad photography students Alden and Madison. It was Alden's first SPE conference and Madison's second SPE conference. We drove together from Alabama to Houston and stayed in an AirBnB together a few blocks from the conference hotel. Highlights Madison, Alden, and I received a travel award from SPESC Madison & [...]
