Recompose this image: Daibutsu Buddha & Bodhisattvas

Objective:

  • Experiment with cropping to understand how different compositions and aspect ratios can influence the impact of an image.

Instructions:

  1. Download the Image: W3D3_Buddha.jpg (hi-res)[Image: Carol Record,2024]

    1. Use this link to download a high-resolution version of the image. The higher the resolution, the more flexibility you have to crop while maintaining a reasonable file size for your final version.
  2. Editing Requirements: Use Adobe Photoshop & Camera Raw to make the following adjustments.
    • Crop Adjustments:
      • Use the Crop Tool to remove distracting elements and create different compositions. Try cropping to highlight various elements and focal points within the image. How many different images can you make from just this one?
      • Consider using the rule of thirds or other composition techniques to enhance the visual appeal.
      • Experiment with different aspect ratios (e.g., 1:1, 4:3, 16:9) to see how they change the visual impact of the image.
    • History Tool:
      • Use the History Tool in Photoshop to create snapshots of each crop. This allows you to quickly compare different crops and aspect ratios.
      • Create at least three different crops with varying aspect ratios.
    • Resize:
      • Resize your final images to 1800 pixels on the longest side.
    • Optional:
      • Light, color, and other creative adjustments.
  3. Analysis & Reflection:
        • Write a brief analysis of each crop, explaining why you chose that particular composition and how it changes the viewer’s perception of the image.
        • Consider how the different crops affect the balance, focus, and overall aesthetic of the image.

Guidelines:

  • Ensure that your edits enhance the image without over-processing.
  • Keep a copy of the original image for comparison.

Discussion:
