Straw Hat Cafe

JSU provides all students with access to LinkedIn Learning so I'm taking advantage of it while I still have access to it. I've been watching a lot of video courses on illustration, Adobe Illustrator, logo design, and photography. Just kind of sampling different courses in order to learn new tools and techniques. I was browsing through photos from my trip to Japan in 2015 looking for some vector practice inspiration and came across this fun sign from a Studio Ghibli-themed cafe called Straw Hat Cafe. It was super simple but still good practice and I'm happy with how it turned [...]

Xanadu Roller Disco Collection

Pattern collection inspired by the movie Xanadu and the roller disco culture of the 1970s and 80s. This set most closely reminds me of my own days spent at the local roller rink. Motifs include skates, stars, streamers, disco balls, and rainbow waves. Teenage me would have totally rocked this jacket. Pattern Design | Spring 2020 | Jamie Runnells

Xanadu Void Collection

The final assignment in my Pattern Design class was to create a 'culture collection.' We were asked to create a pattern inspired by a film, tv series, novel, album, etc. I chose the 80s' movie Xanadu for my inspiration. The movie is a fun fusion of roller disco and Greek mythology set in the 1980s. I had so much fun creating patterns inspired by it that I created 3 collections of patterns instead of just 3 patterns. This collection was inspired by the neon lights and patterns found in the movie Xanadu. Pattern Design | Spring 2020 | Jamie Runnells [...]

Daruma Doll Pattern

Daruma dolls are traditional Japanese dolls that symbolize perseverance and good luck. The dolls come with blank eyes that you fill in. You draw in one eye when you make a wish or set a goal, and then fill in the other eye once that wish or goal has come true. I first encountered Daruma dolls when I visited Japan in 2015 and loved their quirky appearance so working on this project was really fun. I drew this little guy in Adobe Illustrator and created several color variations for a fun and fresh contemporary look. Pattern Design | Spring 2020 [...]
